WordPress 3.1 Goes Live: A Review

1
WordPress

The long awaited version of WordPress is now available for download. WordPress 3.1 Reinhardt is fourteenth major release of WordPress, bringing a host of new updated features to users and developers. You can download or upgrade it from your dashboard.

WordPress 3.0 Thelonious was announced in June 2010 with new functions and features. WordPress 3.1 was expected to be finished before the end of 2010, but various updates and bugs sent that date back.

We have list down some important and new features of WordPress 3.1.

The Admin Bar

The first thing you will notice in WordPress 3.1 is the Admin Bar. The Admin Bar allows users to quickly access the commonly used functions and tools such as Dashboard, Posts, Pages, Comments, Widgets, and Menus etc.

The Admin Bar is similar than WordPress.com hosted websites. The admin bar will only work when a user or administrator logged into the site.

The admin bar is enabled by default. You can enable or disable it from your profile page.

Internal Linking

Internal Linking is the second new and most important function we see in WordPress 3.1 that allows publisher to find and links back the existing published content.

You have to simply click on the link button to do that. In the Insert / Edit link modal box hit on “Or link to existing content” link. You will see a search input field that allows you to find the existing published content. Related entries that matched with the search criteria will show up and hit on an entry to fill the correct URL and Title field.

Post Formats

The third new and my favorite feature in WordPress is Post Format that allows theme developers to better show off certain content types.

The feature is designed for especially those users who want to a Tumblr like experience on their WordPress powered site. That means users can publish a post as an image, video, aside, quote, chat, gallery and status. This featured can help a theme to determine how to show the content on the front end.

Other new features that are introduced or revamped in WordPress 3.1 are:

  • Import and export feature
  • Advance queries and improved custom content type
  • Overhauled blue admin color scheme
  • New network admin and
  • New Cms compatibly

Please let us know what you think about that new WordPress 3.1 features in the comments.
